Cabo de Rama fort – In Rama’s footprints….

Since many years I had been planning to visit this fort, and finally I visited it, last week.

Though the fort is in ruins, it is a popular tourist attraction attributed more to its scenic location.
Here are 10 facts about the erstwhile Cabo de Rama fort:
1)      It is said that Lord Rama, the Hindu deity and his wife lived here during their 14 years of exile from Ayodhya, thus named Cabo de Rama in Portuguese, which translated to Cave of Rama in English.
2)      Situated in Canacona taluka, it is located at a distance of 14 kilometres from Agonda beach, and 30 kilometres from Margao.
3)      It is one of the largest and oldest forts in Goa and occupies an area of 18,000 square meters!
4)      It was built by the Maratha king, Sambhaji Raj.
5)      It was invaded and captured from the Hindu ruler, Raja Sonda, by the Portuguese in 1763.
6)      The fort was invaded by many armies and has witnessed many battles.
7)      It houses a small chapel of Saint Antonio, which is, renovated and still used by devotees. Next to it is a statue of Mother Mary.
8)      The fort had elaborate defence system including a moat and several bastions.
9)      The western side of the fort renders beautiful view of the Arabian Sea and Cabo de Rama beach.

10)  From 1935 until 1955, this for was used as a prison.

Nirvana!

Shop review #1

Am I a critic? Maybe, however I love to review things, services, products, hotels etc and write about them. So here come's my first review of a shop.

Last week, I happened to stop by 'Nirvana' shop at the Goa airport  at the Departure lounge. A cool shop with a Goan theme. T-shirts, mugs, magnets, book marks, coasters and cool bags. I love bags, especially the ecofriendly cloth /canvas bags which look cool and are reusable. And could not resist buying a bag (it was a bit pricey for Rs. 499 only) and some of the Goan memorabilia. These are marketed by the ‘Nirvana’ company. The service representatives at this shop, both of the girls, are very customer friendly. And graciously showed me around the shop, which was recently inaugurated in July 2015. Though the Goan theme based items at this shop are cool, I must say these come at a price! However such pieces are rarely available in the touristy or the common marketplaces in Goa. Do check it out!

I love Goa! Don’t you?

Note: The best part of travelling is that you come across different people, places and products - the 3 P mantra to one’s advantage! Motivation to travel more!

Cinderella

Every day, at bedtime, my daughter invariably wants me to read the story of ‘Cinderella’to her. She loves it!

She is a huge fan of Disney princesses (an avid collector of all sorts of Disney princesses merchandise), her favorite one, being ‘Cinderella’. Thus, I decided to treat her to the real ‘Cinderella’ movie, which was launched recently in India! An excuse to treat myself too….

My princess!

Thus, I took her to watch this movie alongwith her friends, last weekend.

The 'lil' gang

And lo, this was our first visit to the ‘Inox’ theater in Margao, which is the second multiplex in Goa, the first one is located in Panaji. We were lucky that this mutiplex was inaugurated, last month on March 31, 2015. Thanks, to its new location – now Margao movie watchers like us, can enjoy some good movies which are screened only at multiplexes. Or else, we would had  to travel for quite some time, navigating our way through Panaji traffic.

I loved every bit of the movie, especially the Victorian style - Cinderella’s house and the beautiful surroundings. However, my daughter felt that the animated version of the ‘Cinderella’ was better, as the characters seemed to be more beautiful. I guess perception matters!

The message I carried back with me from the movie was the advice Cinderella’s mother gave her. ‘Have courage and be kind’! And occasionally believe in magic!! This is a very powerful message and I truly believe in it.

On returning home, my daughter, Shreya asked me: what is magic? I tried to give all sorts of weird answers, like, how I was helped by a stranger etc. She pointed out that this was kindness. Magic is: you, yourself, your body! How very true. Children have a way to simplify!

My message to all the ‘lil girls and all the women is: go and watch the ‘Cinderella’ movie – to experience and relive the childhood fairy tale!

Magic is believing in yourself, if you can do that, you can make anything happen.

Christmas fervor!

The Christmas season has set in! In Goa, the people have started decorating their houses and shopping for gifts.....
Many of the hotels and resorts which dot the coastline of Goa have already decorated their premises beautifully to celebrate Christmas and the tourist season! Here is a peek into some of the wonderful decorations at Taj Exotica located at Calwaddo in Benaulim, Goa.

Margoa’s Glorious Steps!

Margoa can now boast of beautiful murals.....

The century old Victorian design steps leading to Monte Hill adjacent to Hospicio Hospital (one of the oldest hospital in Goa) have been  renovated and the walls have been beautiful painted. These steps lead to the Monte chapel, located atop the Monte hill.

The facilitators....
This 'state of the art project' was inaugurated in November 2013. One of my acquaintances, Ethel Lobo, a dedicated social activist, has been instrumental (along with other liked minded people) in making this aesthetic dream a reality!

Daily life

A la Mario Miranda style...

Let me explore, alone, peacefully!

Recently, this summer, this venue provided a creative platform for many young artists, during the two day, art festival organised by Canopy Azure. And these beautiful artistic surroundings can be utilized to host many more creative festivals in future.....

It seems these are the only artistic steps in Goa, that I am aware of. Thus these may be called Goa's Glorious Steps!
